Hālau Hula`O Kupukalau`ie`ie, whose name means “flourishing of the `Ie`ie,” is a traditional Hawaiian dance school dedicated to preserving the beauty of Hawaiian culture through the art of hula. We continue the Legacy of Hula Master Maiki Aiu Lake, who has influenced generations of hula practitioners in Hawai`i and abroad. Her motto, “Hula is Life,” serves as our inspiration and guide.
Under the direction of Kumu Hula Analu Akao, Hālau Hula `O Kupukalau`ie`ie offers `auana (contemporary) and kahiko (traditional) hula, with emphasis on language, music and craft. The hālau is a non-profit organization and it‘s fiscal sponsorship is through Dancer‘s Group.
Based in the East Bay near Oakland and Berkeley and easily accessible from Highways 80 and 580, we offer classes to beginner, intermediate and advanced haumana (students) of various ages. Enrollment is ongoing.
Classes for Nā Wahine (women‘s) are held on Sunday afternoons, and our Gracious Ladies class meets on Monday evenings. Classes for keiki (children) and kane (men) are planned. |
